Cardiothoracic services are provided from the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC), a purpose built facility which became operational on 1st July 2007. Services are essentially tertiary although the Cardiothoracic Directorate incorporates some elements of secondary care activity. The Centre provides services for the Essex population and under Patient Choice accepts referrals from outside the county.

• Cardiovascular surgery including minimal access valve surgery
• Dedicated Consultant Anaesthetic team
• Specialist perfusion service
• Thoracic surgery
• Interventional cardiology including angioplasty
• Rotablation
• PFO (patent foramen ovale) closure
• Electrophysiology including AF ablation
• Cardiac devices implantation and management, single and dual pacemakers
• Arrhythmia management
• Diagnostics and imaging such as TTE, TOE, DSE and contrast echo
• Consultant Intensivist led critical care and high dependency
• Outpatient facilities
• Rehabilitation including a gym
• Heart failure service
• Grown Up Congenital Heart disease
• Access to cardiac CT, PETCT and lung function testing is available in the building though managed via other directorates
• Centralised electronic booking via a dedicated team
• Collegiate review of surgical referrals
• Participation in MDTs
• Primary Angioplasty
